The Moon Midwives of Cornwall
Long before due-date apps and birth charts, the women of our coastal parish kept a notebook. My grandmother — the last of them — recorded every birth in her village against the phase of the moon, the height of the tide, and the particular stones found that morning on the beach.

For a long time I thought it was folklore. Then I studied mineralogy at UCLA and spent six years at the Getty researching prehistoric jewelry — and slowly the pattern emerged. Across Native American shamanic traditions, Japanese Shinto, and Indian Ayurveda, the same eight phases were paired with strikingly similar stones. My grandmother’s notebook was not folklore. It was inheritance.
